"... On the Cartier Site. [At Payne Lake], the foundations of square houses and a church-like structure, together with a stone dam and a stone causeway wide enough for wheeled vehicles gave clear indications of a European style village."(Lee 1968)
Comment: Payne Lake may have been named by the Old Norse. The Old Norse oftern named rivers and lakes by distinctive geological names. The Old Norse may have called the water "Lack Panne." Payne Lake looks like a pan (upside down) on our maps.
