ARTIFACT ASSEMBLAGES

"The relatively close assemblages throughout much of the region is ... the most striking single characteristic of Shield Prehistory. A somewhat similar degree of cultural homogeneity appears to have existed among the historic Algonquins." (Smithsonian 1981)

Comment: A definitive summary of the chapter was hard to select.  However, the overall thesis was: There were only two major groups of artifacts; (1) those associated with the people of the Shield  Prehistory and (2) those associated with the Algonquins.  Both groups of artifacts extended through out the region.  (Paine, 2001)

Fitzhugh (Smithsonian Institute): We've seen ... large amounts of Viking material turning up in native sites in the arctic regions of North America. This material dates to ... 300 years after the initial Vinland voyages. We ... have a time period that began with the Vinland contact episode explorations, and ... after the society in Greenland ... settled, walrus-ivory trade with Europe started to be really important. Probably ... , this stimulated the continuous western orientation of the Greenland Norse, not only up into the Greenland walrus-hunting territories but across the Davis Strait ... These are areas where the Vikings were exploring and trading, and where native populations were trading Viking materials .... Of course, the continuing need for wood in treeless Greenland prompted return visits to ... Labrador.

Comment: The "large amounts of Viking material" must have reached critical mass. The items are now too numerous to explain as "hoax." (Paine 2006)
