POST HOLES

The table in Part III 4.42 of Plummet's report describes the secondary structures. The text mentions the possibilities of certain depressions, poorly defined, being post holes. The depressions were more likely to be found in the berm and in the extremities of the hemispheres (at the end). Unfortunately, Plummet wrote that the nature of the posts was not defined and the imperfections did not permit a serious hypothesis about the type of coverage.

This longhouse lay about 300 miles north of the tree line. But this longhouse site had visible post holes before excavation even started. At Pamiok Lee uncovered a pattern of post holes up to four (4) inches in diameter along each side of the low walls.

Comment: Plummet did not attempt to understand the post hole pattern at the northern longhouse. Lee thought the post hole pattern in the longhouses of Pamiok were "not load bearing." Yet the hole pattern resembles the traces left behind from numerous arched longhouses built by Algonquin Indians.
