The Quinnipiac believe their ancestors were Vikings in 1100. Quinnipiac means, "Handsome people." Their original name was QUIRIPI, which came from"greppr" in Old Norse, meaning "stately, handsome." Typical sound morphing changed the "r" to "n" during the colonial period. The "ac" ending of the name derived from Old Norse "foolk" via "olk" and "ack." (Sherwin, Vol. 7 p. 131)
